The Deshaun Watson saga is finally over. Watson was traded in a seismic deal.
He was traded to the Cleveland Browns on Friday. The Browns also added a 2024 fifth-round draft pick to the deal.
Watson had to waive his no-trade clause for the deal to become official.
In exchange for the franchise quarterback, the Browns mortgage the future to acquire him. They traded three first-round picks to the Houston Texans.
The three first-round picks are presented in the next three drafts.
The Texans also received a 2023 third-round draft pick and a 2024 fourth-round draft pick in the package.
Watson eliminated the Browns from competition Thursday with the Carolina Panthers. That left the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints in talks.
The Falcons and Saints balked at parts of the contract that Watson wanted. Still, the Browns were ready to come back into play and give in to the star quarterback.
He signed a five-year, $230 million contract with the Browns. Watson will have an average salary of $46 million per season.
The entire $230 million is guaranteed. It is the largest guaranteed contract in NFL history.
Watson missed the entire 2021 season as he was accused of sexual misconduct with women. A grand jury did not find enough evidence to convict him along with one of the women who accused him of wrongdoing.
The Texans paid him his full salary last season for missing games. Now he will return to the field with a fresh start.
As Watson arrives in Cleveland, Baker Mayfield, who has led the team in recent seasons, will now be traded. Mayfield requested a trade on Thursday.
