COACHELLA VALLEY, CA – The Coachella Valley Arena American Hockey League team will be called the Coachella Valley Firebirds, it was revealed on Friday.
Friday’s announcement at the Constellation Ballroom at the Classic Club Golf Course in Palm Desert was hosted by the team owner Oak View Group and the Seattle Kraken National Hockey League team.
The Firebirds will be the 32nd team in the AHL and will be the branch of the Kraken minor leagues.
According to officials, one of the reasons the Firebird was chosen was its mythical nature similar to the Kraken – a giant octopus-like sea monster from Scandinavian folklore.
“Over the past two years, and after listening to the fans, our leaders and our partners, we have become heavily involved in identifying the best team name and the best brand to represent the nine towns of the Valley of Coachella, ”said Tim Leiweke, CEO of Oak View Group. .
“As a proud resident of the valley, I think the Firebirds have a meaningful representation of the beauty and what people experience when they come to our great community.”
The Firebirds red, orange and black logo features a fierce, fire-breathing bird. The team is expected to start playing in the 2022-2023 season.
