IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WLUC) – A Dickinson County esports team helps feed a hungry neighbor. The group hosted a ‘Game-a-thon’ fundraiser today to raise non-perishable food.

Gavin DuBose, an 8th grade student from Iron Mountain, brought 75 items to donate to TV6 Canathon. The student who contributed the most articles won an extra “life” in a Super Smash Bros. tournament. today.

“I needed this extra life and wanted to help the community,” said Gavin Dubose, 8th grade student from Iron Mountain.

Dubose used his extra life to progress through the college category. The Iron Mountain Varsity esports team hosted the “Game-a-thon” during today’s half-day of school. It costs two items to watch and three items to play.

“We have 52 students who signed up for our Canathon-Gameathon this year,” said Michelle Haferkorn, esports coach and technology teacher for Iron Mountain.

This is the inaugural year of the E-sports team. Haferkorn says there are 20 students on the list.

“[This gives] a different place for the students to shine. Students who are not your typical athletes, even if eSports is a sport, ”said Haferkorn.

Haferkorn says she’s not a gamer, but has been teaching technology in school for 29 years. The team competes in games like Madden football, FIFA football, Rocket League, Splatoon, and of course Super Smash Bros.

“I’ve seen people playing there who aren’t on the esports team who are pretty good. I think it lets them see what we’re doing and then it will give them more interest in joining us next year, ”said Brenden LaPointe, esports team captain and senior at Iron. Mountain.

LaPointe is the captain of the Super Smash Bros. team. He has been playing the game for several years, but has just started playing competitively. Haferkorn says today was fun and fun, but it’s about giving back.

“For our students, I think they need to look into the community and know that there are a lot of people out there who need our help right now,” Haferkorn said.

Haferkorn says today brings awareness and community support to the TV6 Canathon and E-sports team, while having fun.
