One of the fastest growing sports in the country is becoming even bigger and the spotlight may soon turn to New York. Massive investments in the construction of new courts could hint that the Empire State may soon be home to another professional sports team.
Professional sports teams in New York
New York is a huge state, and we already have more than a dozen pro teams (yes, we count the Jets). While we’re jam-packed with basketball, baseball, hockey, football, and soccer teams, there’s a new sport that has only recently launched a professional league.
Pickleball in New York
Pickleball, the game that was once reserved for the elderly and other low-impact enthusiasts, has swept the country, and it recently turned professional. It also attracts a lot of high profile attention. LeBron James made headlines last week when it was announced his investment group would be buying an upcoming expansion team. But are we coming to New York?
Does New York have a professional pickleball team?
There are a few paths that could lead Major League Pickleball (MLP) to New York. First, the new courts being built in New York. Since MLP holds tournaments of all 12 pro teams in different cities instead of having “home courts” for each team, the “main pickleball facility” planned for next year could be the destination for a tournament. on the East coast. But what about a real team?
As a professional sport, MLP works a little differently than most. The tournament style of their competitions means that while some teams like Florida Smash and ATX Pickleballers are tied to states or cities, others are not. That could soon change, with MLP saying they “could move towards all geographically related teams”.
Interested in starting your own pickleball journey? With more expansion teams on the horizon, you have some time to bring your skill levels up to pro level before they’re announced (and hopefully with a New York-based one). Check out some great terrain options here.
