AN EXTREME sports enthusiast died of heart failure at the age of just 20, just days after doctors told him he had beaten cancer.
Adventurer Tom Greenwood had been given the green light following an operation to remove a tumor from his bladder.
But after starting a new job as a landscape gardener, Tom, from Congleton, Cheshire, started complaining of headaches and fatigue.
He was later found collapsed behind the wheel of his Land Rover on his way to work.
Paramedics were called to the scene and attempts were made to resuscitate him with a defibrillator, but he was pronounced dead at Leighton Hospital in Crewe.
A pathologist said the most likely cause of Tom’s death on March 13 this year was “spontaneous cardiac arrhythmia.”
An investigation in Warrington learned how Tom enjoyed extreme sports such as BMX and skateboarding.
His mother Sarah Greenwood, 45, said: “He has always been fit and active and has lived the outdoor life. He developed a love for extreme sports and went mountain bike races.
He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in July 2016.
“In March 2017, he was informed that he had obtained the green light.
She added: “Because he was feeling so much better, he started a new job as a landscape gardener.
“He only worked there for a week and really enjoyed it, but came home broken and mentioned that he felt tired and complained of a headache but attributed it to his new job. “
“The day he died I was leaving the house and screamed to make sure he was ready for work and he said he was but later got a phone call to tell me that a passer-by had found Tom slumped in his car.
“The only thing out of the ordinary is that he was getting tired with headaches the last few days.”
The pathologist, Dr Mohammed Al-Jafari, said: “There is nothing to explain why the death occurred.
“On the balance of probabilities, we end up with a sudden cardiac arrhythmia which resulted in death. The only thing unusual is bladder cancer at this age.”
After finding a natural cause death, Coroner Jean Harkin told Ms Greenwood: “I offer my sincere condolences, I can’t imagine what you have to go through. I hope this helps you get going. before.
“It’s tragic that Tom has been through so much in his life and succumbs to a natural cause.”
