The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired head coach Urban Meyer. The experiment lasted less than a year.
Meyer signed a five-year contract with the team in January 2021. However, it only lasted 11 months on the job.
“After several weeks of deliberations and an in-depth analysis of Urban’s entire mandate with our team, I am bitterly disappointed to come to the conclusion that immediate change is imperative for everyone,” said the owner Shad Khan in a statement. “I informed Urban of the change tonight. As I said in October, regaining our trust and respect was essential. Unfortunately, that did not happen.
“Trent Baalke continues to be our General Manager and will work with Darrell to ensure our team will be inspired and competitive while proudly representing Jacksonville in our last four games of the season. In the spirit of closure and reloading of our players, staff and fans, I will not be commenting further until the end of the NFL season. “
The successful varsity coach was fired after going 2-11. His last game with the team was a 20-0 loss to the Tennessee Titans last Sunday.
Meyer was fired after an allegation came to light on Wednesday by former kicker Josh Lambo. He was released by the team in October.
Before he left, he claims Meyer kicked him during training. Meyer denied the allegations.
“Josh’s description of me and this incident is completely inaccurate, and there are eyewitnesses to disprove his account,” Meyer told the Tampa Bay Times. “[General manager] Thirty [Baalke] and I have met him on several occasions to encourage his performance, and it was never mentioned.
Meyer also had an incident the weekend after a Thursday night football game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was seen being run over by a woman in his restaurant.
He then claimed he made a mistake and was going to change. Khan said it never happened.
Earlier this week, there were allegations that Meyer had a heated trade with Marvin Jones and his assistant coaches.
Jaguars offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell has been named the team’s interim head coach. This is the second consecutive season Bevell has served as interim head coach.
He also took over after Matt Patricia was fired with the Detroit Lions in the 2020 season.
