MANCHESTER: Premier League club Manchester United’s Instagram post about the return of Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo broke the record on the social media site.
Manchester United’s announcement of his return on Instagram has garnered 12,915,652 likes to date. With over 12 million likes, Manchester United’s post has become the most liked post by a sports team on Instagram, according to Goal.com.
But the record for the most liked sports photo on Instagram still belongs to Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain whose photo with the Copa America trophy has gone viral and has more than 21 million likes.
Manchester United confirmed on Friday that the club have reached an agreement with Juventus for the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, subject to an agreement on personal conditions, visa and medical care. They wrote on Instagram: “Welcome home, @Cristiano #MUFC #ManUtd #CristianoRonaldo #Ronaldo.”
Cristiano is a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, has won more than 30 major trophies in his career so far, including five UEFA Champions League titles, four FIFA Club World Cups, seven titles champion of England, Spain and Italy, and the European Championship for his native Portugal. In his first stint at Manchester United, he scored 118 goals in 292 games.
