The Miami Hurricanes, Florida, are the latest college football team to pull out of an upcoming Bowl game. The school has announced that the Hurricanes will not be playing the 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

The New Years Eve game is now over, unless a new opponent is named. The Hurricanes were scheduled to face the Washington State Cougars at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX on CBS.

Prior to the cancellation, the game was scheduled to be played on December 31 at noon EST on CBS.

“We are extremely disappointed that our football team is unable to participate in the 2021 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl,” said Jennifer Strawley, assistant director of athletics and chief operating officer for the Hurricanes. “But due to the number of COVID-19 cases impacting our roster, we do not have enough student-athletes to compete safely, and the health and safety of our student-athletes will always be our concern. top priority. This team has worked hard all season to earn an invitation to bowling and my thoughts are with our student-athletes, especially our seniors. I would also like to thank interim head coach Jess Simpson and our football team for all of their efforts in preparing for this bowl game.

“We regret the impact this has on the Washington State program and their experience in the playoffs. I want to commend the Sun Bowl Association for their tireless work in helping us overcome this situation over the past few days. We are grateful for their support as a bowl partner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

This is the third Bowl game that was cut short on Sunday due to COVID-19 issues. The Military Bowl and the Fenway Bowl were also canceled due to the same concerns.

The nation’s second-oldest Bowl game was last played in 2019 between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Florida State Seminoles. The Sun Devils won 20-14.

Only the historic game of the Rose Bowl has been around longer than the Sun Bowl.

With the cancellation expected, the Hurricanes and Cougars will not play again until 2022. Mario Cristobal will lead the Canes when they return to action.

Jake Dickert will be in his first full season after taking over on an interim basis last season. Dickert took over when Nick Rolovich was fired for not having been vaccinated against COVID-19.
