Millbrook High School has saved its 2021 football season.

The Blazers will merge with Dover for the coming year, Hudson Valley Sports Report has learned. Millbrook athletic director Al Hammell confirmed the news and said he plans to email parents and players on Monday.

“We just wanted to be able to give these kids a season,” said a relieved Hammell on Friday night.

The news comes five months after Millbrook had to cancel the 2020 season – delayed until spring 2021 due to the pandemic – and two months after the school announced it would also not have a team at fall 2021 due to declining attendance.

But at the time, Hammell said he hoped to contact Dover, who also plays eight-a-side football, about a proposed merger.

“It’s something I’ve been working on for months,” Hammell said.

Hammell said the Millbrook Board of Education has approved the plan and the school will provide a bus to Dover daily for practice and back to the Millbrook campus when completed.

Blazer players will have to try their hand at Dragons when official practice begins on August 23. Dover sporting director Paul Kenny is also the team’s football coach this season.

“It’s been quite a process,” Hammell said. “I’m glad we were able to do that and give these kids a season.”
