Pioneers Nip Ketcham in an exciting encounter
POUGHKEEPSIE – It took 22 days in September for the Poughkeepsie High School Women’s Swim Team to finally open their season, and it was well worth it.
With longtime coach Galen Franchek in the lead from the pool, the Pioneers started their program with an exciting 86-82 victory over Roy C. Ketcham on Wednesday at Poughkeepsie Middle School.
While Ketcham won eight of 11 races, it was Poughkeepsie’s depth that secured the narrow victory.
Renata Martinez of the Pioneers was a double winner, winning the 200-yard free in 2 minutes 20.75 seconds and the 100 free in 1: 04.85. The Poughkeepsie 200 free relay team was also victorious.
But where Po’town took his points was in a plethora of second places. Julia Quezada (pictured above) finished second in the 200m IM and 100m freestyle, while Olivia Nyugen placed second in the 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.
Jasmine Bautista was second in the 50 freestyle. Ashley Ojeda was second in the 100 butterflies, Abigail Matthews was second in the 500 freestyle and Riona Creavy was also second.
Ketcham won three double individual winners. Sophie Varon won the 200-MI and the 100-sein. Phoebe DiNardo won the 50 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. And Annie Vallamattan touched first in the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke.
RCK also won a pair of relays.
