The San Giljan Aquatics Club has become the latest sports team on the island to be sponsored by Gozitan construction magnate Joseph Portelli, through his company J Portelli Projects.

In a statement, the club said J Portelli Projects would be its title sponsor from summer 2022 until summer 2023.

The sponsorship agreement was signed between group president Joseph Portelli and ASC San Giljan president Peter Bonavia in the presence of club secretary Michael Fenech.

“J Portelli Projects’ investment will further enable San Giljan ASC to achieve both short and long-term goals, including creating opportunities for new and experienced players, as well as assisting in the overall performance of the team. As well as increasing the competitive advantage of the club, this sponsorship will enable initiatives targeting the community,” the club said in its statement.

“The union between the two prolific entities is the result of a perfectly aligned commitment to making a difference through sport. San Giljan ASC and J Portelli Projects strongly believe that sport, wellness and mental health are intertwined and, to this end, strive to provide young people with free access to sport, for healthier habits and an overall improved lifestyle,” he continued.

San Giljan ASC is the latest club to sign an agreement with Portelli, which directly sponsors or participates in five teams in three different sports.

Portelli is currently chairman of Premier League football club Hamrun Spartans and bombed 1.5 million at the club since taking over in March 2021.

Portelli also sponsors the Nadur Youngsters football team, where his son is actually currently the president. Portelli himself used to play with the club and had already been president in previous years. He caught the eye when in April 2022 he was registered as a Nadur player and was substituted in a match against Kercem Ajax, where he scored a penalty for the game to end 1-1 .

Also in football, Portelli sponsors his hometown club Qala Saints, who compete in the Gozo Football Association’s First Division, having comfortably won the Second Division in the 2021/22 season.

Portelli’s other sports sponsorship venture is in futsal – an indoor football discipline – where he sponsors the University of Malta futsal team.
