- The AFL is the first sports league in the world to partner with the avatar lineup
- Reddit has content agreements with the NFL and NBA
The Australian Football League (AFL) has become the first major sports league in the world to launch an official range of avatars on Reddit, allowing fans to personalize their presence on the social media platform with their team’s kit favourite.
Kit from every AFL club will be available throughout the 2022 season, allowing users to add event-themed jackets, shirts and gear to their avatar. “Redditor” avatars appear alongside user profiles and comments on the site which is divided into “subreddits” focusing on different topics.
Sports make up a big chunk of these subreddits, with entire communities dedicated to different leagues, clubs, and niches. Adding official avatars could help boost engagement on the platform and encourage users to spend more time discussing the AFL and its teams, benefiting both the league and Reddit .
“The AFL community on Reddit is one of the most active and vibrant online homes for football fans, so we’re delighted to be collaborating on a sporting world first that allows fans to proudly represent their club,” said said AFL Chief Executive Kylie Rogers. customer and sales manager.
“Our main goal is to create an emotional connection between our fans and the game, and our partnership with Reddit allows us to do that in a whole new way with some of our most passionate fans.”
“We are delighted to partner with the AFL as one of the best sports leagues in the world. The clubs hold a special place in the hearts of millions of Australians and they were a natural partner for this initiative. said David Ray, Market Director of Reddit Australia. “This will give all AFL club fans the opportunity to customize their own Reddit avatar, while showing their passion for their favorite teams on Reddit.”
The AFL has a content partnership with the National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA), while it has other avatar partnerships with gaming companies Riot and Bungie.
