In a new study published by odds comparison experts Sidelines.io, the Golden State Warriors are the most searched American sports team in the world. The Dubs were the most searched American team in 64 countries. This number eclipses the second American team, the Chicago Bulls, which have been the most searched in 16 countries. A total of seven NBA franchises made the top 10, two NFL franchises and one MLB franchise.
No doubt the Warriors’ popularity is tied to their resurgence among the league’s elite. After two seasons down from three championships in five years, the Warriors are the No. 3 seed in this year’s Western Conference playoffs and have the immensely popular two-time MVP Stephen Curry as their leader.
The fact that the NBA has more franchises in the top 10 than any other league is a testament to the worldwide popularity of the sport. Basketball is very popular all over the world and only follows football, the world game, in this regard.
Poor MLB. Only one team, the Boston Red Sox, ranks in the top 10. Their success is surely a factor. But the team is owned by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Premier League football team Liverpool FC.
The NFL is doing its best to make the sport global, to increase revenue. But the game simply did not capture the imagination of citizens abroad.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came in fourth place, the NFL’s most popular team with the top searches in 11 countries. The Bucs were the most popular team in Fiji with over 450 searches per month, Papua New Guinea with over 300 searches and American Samoa with over 250 searches per month.
In contrast, the tallest of the Warriors searches per month came from Brazil with over 270,000 on average, the Philippines with over 216,000 and India with over 65,000 searches per month.
To be fair. the NFL is always one step ahead of all sports in the United States in terms of research.
The Dallas Cowboys, ranked sixth in searches worldwide, are the most popular sports team in the United States with more than 5,500,000 searches per month. It’s quite impressive. They call themselves “Team America” for a reason.
Yet you can’t help but wonder, as the owners and commissioners of these leagues watch the changing landscape of sports consumption, what is continued growth supposed to look like?
Perhaps the US market is enough to keep football growing exponentially over the next 50 years. Americans love their football. This is the reason the USFL and other alternative leagues started. There is an appetite for gambling in this country that is unmatched anywhere else.
However, the international market remains an elusive market for the NFL. Maybe one day it will be understood. It’s a safe bet that it will be necessary one day.
As the country’s demographics and sensibilities towards the sport change, all leagues will see an ebb and flow in popularity. Having a foothold in additional markets is a way to manage this reality while serving the bottom line.
