In a showdown between rival colleges Hamlet and Rockingham on Thursday, the two schools split on the baseball and softball fields.

Rockets end Red Rams winning streak

At the start of the day, Hamlet had won its first seven games of the season, but that ended when the Rockets beat the Red Rams 4-3 on the road.

In what Rockingham head coach Jamie McDonald called “a typical Rockingham-Hamlet rivalry game”, Caden Nolan pitched a full game and took the Rockets to victory. He recorded 10 strikeouts and allowed only three hits.

Opposite Nolan was Hamlet’s Evan Hodges, who also pitched a full game. Hodges whipped up an impressive 18 batters.

Leading the Rockets at home plate was Jason Gainey, who went 4-for-4 and scored two runs. Preston Fann and Andrae Streeter both had two hits and Lucky Cipriani had one hit.

With the game tied in the top of the seventh, Cipriani marked the eventual winning run for the Rockets.

Hamlet head coach Anthony Hailey noted that the Red Rams were not swinging at bats well and were also struggling to capitalize with runners in scoring position, leaving eight runners in scoring position.

“We also made some basic running mistakes and errors,” Hailey said, “but overall I’m really proud of how my guys competed until the last out and I couldn’t stand them anymore. ask.”

The Rockets improved to 6-3 and will travel to Anson Orange on May 2. Hamlet is now 7-1 and will play in Cordova on Thursday, April 28.

Lady Red Rams outlast Lady Rockets

On the softball field, the Lady Red Rams won this year’s edition of the rivalry in a high-scoring game, which ended in a 19-16 victory.

Mackenzie Quick pitched a full game for Hamlet and had 16 strikeouts, while adding three singles in five trips to the plate.

Rockingham took a 4-0 lead in the second set, but the Lady Red Rams fought back and managed to score seven runs late in the set to take the lead.

The Lady Rockets regained the lead in third by adding five points and one more in fourth.

Battling again, Hamlet added five more runs in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth to tie the game.

The Lady Red Rams held off the Rockets in the top of the sixth and added five runs late in the frame to take the lead for good.

Quick faced six batters in the top of the seventh and finished the game with her 16th strikeout.

Hamlet’s main hitters included Shelby Brown (two singles and a triple) and Amariyana Ingram (three singles), who also each tied on walks. Hayden Robinson (single, triple) and Olivia Brown (double, single) added two hits in the win.

Kalynn McCormick and Kinsie Lyerly connected for a brace, and Lyerly also scored a point when an error allowed him to round the bases. Hollie Diaz Clemons and Lexi Smith both walked to base twice.

The Lady Red Rams are 4-4 this season and will play Cordova Middle on April 28 to wrap up the regular season game.
